Did You Know?
In ancient Egypt, people believed the soul existed in the brain. So, in order to rid the soul of demonic possession, they prepared a poultice of lapis and gold and placed it on the crown of the head. In extreme cases, they would drill a small hole in the skull through which they poured the poultice into the head.
Lapis lazuli dates back to 3,000 BCE and has been the favorite of both mystics and royalty. Its name is derived from the Latin word lapis which means stone, and lazuli which means blue color (derived from Polish word lazur, French word azur, Arabic word azul and Portuguese and Spanish word azul). The word lazuli is also associated with the place where it was mined, Lāzaward. Hence, lapis lazuli also means 'stone of Lāzhward'. This stone is commonly found in Chile, Russia, Italy, Egypt, and the USA.

Lapis lazuli is considered a holy stone by many different faiths. In ancient times, it was worn by the Egyptian high priest. However, the Romans believed that it had powerful aphrodisiac properties.
